PLOT SYNOPSIS:

A lyrical novel about family and friendship from critically acclaimed author Benjamin Alire Sáenz.
Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

MY REVIEW:
I started this book mostly because I loved the cover and I have heard many great things about the book. I was expecting to read something else, but this doesn’t mean that the book was bad.

This is a friendship, love and coming of age story of two boys who discover that sometimes simple can be beautiful too. The narrator, Aristotle “Ari”, is a high school boy living in El Paso, Texas and the story took place in 1987.

MY REVIEW:
I have mixed feelings about this book, it just left me wondering around helpless. It was an unusual perspective for me, told from the point of view of a five-year-old Jack, who has spent his entire life in Room with his mother. Room is a “world” measured eleven foot by eleven, and Jack thinks that the world outside the Room is “Outer Space”. His mother manages to raise him as good as possible through all the difficulties. At night they are sometimes visited by “Old Nick” from whom Jack must hide in his wardrobe. It takes a while to learn why Jack and his Ma are there, how they got there in the first place and why they can’t leave. I don’t want to spoil the book, because it will be better if you discover everything step-by-step, that’s all I’ll say about the plot.

The relationship between Jack and his mother is touching. Jack’s innocence, his magical Continue reading →
